The need for a safety certification in Brisbane, Queensland

Having a mobile safety certificate for your vehicle at the time of sale is a legal requirement and is a requirement for a transfer of registration in Queensland.

Obtaining a mobile safety certificate protects the buyer, as it acts as a guarantee that the vehicle meets the safety standards set at the time of inspection, hence allowing the transfer of registration between buyer and seller quickly.

A Safety Certificate will take approximately 40-50 minutes. At the completion of the inspection a detailed report will be issued. If the vehicle fails inspection, you have fourteen days to rectify the problem and call us back out for a re-inspection and our inspector will provide you with your safety certificate on completion of the re-inspection.

For how long are safety certificates valid? The validity of safety certifications depends from vehicle to vehicle.

In case of a private seller, the safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2000kms, whichever comes first from the date the safety certificate is issued.

With motor dealers, the safety certificate validity is either 3 months or 1000kms, whichever comes first from the date that the certificate is issued.

When is a safety certificate not needed?

While safety certificates are vital, there are certain instances where the certificate isn’t really needed. Here are some of those instances:

In case the vehicle is unregistered
In cases where the vehicle is traded into a motor dealer that is licensed
In cases where the vehicles are traded between motor dealers that are licensed

We would like to note that a safety certificate is different from a pre-purchase inspection. A safety certificate is a basic check according to the code of practice, where a pre-purchase inspection serves as the mechanical reliability or condition of the vehicle.
